The classic Jimbaran seafood night, 1.6km from the villa: chairs on the beach, the day’s catch on the grill, and the sun going down over the water. Loud, cheerful and entirely the point. Head down the hill in good time for the sunset, and come hungry.

ROCK BAR AT AYANA BALI

Set on the rocks above the surf and reached by a small cable car, Rock Bar is possibly the showiest sundowner on this stretch of coast. Go early for the best seats; the view earns the fuss.

This restaurant is situated inside the Gending Kedis estate, just a few minutes walk from your villa. Pizzas, burgers and sirloin steaks sit alongside fried rice and Asian dishes on a menu with genuine range; wide enough that nobody has to compromise.

The flavour count here runs past twenty on any given day: cinnamon sugar for the traditionalists, Thai tea crème brûlée for the show-offs, salted caramel for everyone else. Kedonganan Fish Market

A short 5.4km drive north brings you to the fish market, where you choose the day’s catch straight off the ice and hand it to the cooks to grill for a small fee per kilo. Go early, while the boats are still coming in and the pick of it is yours.

Casa Padel Bali

Padel is the racquet sport that many have become obsessed with, and Casa Padel has proper courts just a short drive down the hill, 2.6km from the villa. Practice your swing and timing, locate a few forgotten muscles, and thoroughly earn a long lunch afterwards. Beginner lessons and rental gear are available.

Saka Museum

The closest cultural excursion just 2km from the villa, this museum sets Balinese ritual and craft against rotating contemporary shows, inside a building worth the visit on its own. A calm, air-conditioned hour or two off the ridge. Check the opening days before setting out.

Garuda Wisnu Kencana

The cultural park is home to one of the tallest statues in the world, along with dance performances and wide views across the south of Bali. A breezy half-day out that keeps all ages occupied, with ample photo opportunities.

Samasta Lifestyle Village

A cluster of cafés, restaurants and shops near the foot of the hill, useful for an easy lunch, a coffee run, or picking up the things you forgot to pack. The rooftop bars take over later in the day, once the errands are done.

Kecak Dance at Uluwatu Temple

Worth the drive south: the Kecak fire dance performed at sunset on the Uluwatu cliffs, a circle of dozens chanting with the Indian Ocean behind them. Book tickets ahead, as this one reliably fills up well before showtime.
